Bees Attack Texas City Workers; One Stung 1,000 Times

WICHITA FALLS (July 24, 2014) A Wichita Falls street department worker was stung about 1,000 times Thursday when an aggressive swarm of bees attacked him as he mowed grass, and two co-workers who tried to help him were stung, too.

Initial reports indicated incorrectly that firefighters were stung when they went to the man’s aid.

Wichita Falls city officials blamed Thursday's attack on Africanized honey bees.

The worker was attacked while he was mowing grass along culverts near the Weeks Park Tennis Center, spokesman Barry Levy said.

He was taken to a Wichita Falls hospital where he was listed in good condition Thursday afternoon, Levy said.

His two co-workers were also taken to the hospital, he said.

One was treated and later released and the other was admitted in good condition, he said.

One worker fled into a nearby tennis center, and the swarm went with him.

The center, a nearby trail and part of a golf course remain closed until personnel confirm the bees are gone.
