HOUSTON (January 2, 2014) Matthew Sowders, the estranged husband of a missing pregnant Texas woman, was charged with capital murder Thursday, hours after searchers found a body in a creek near the woman’s home.
The body that a Texas EquuSearch team found Thursday in a Houston-area creek has not been officially identified as that of Melissa Sowders, 26, who was last seen on Dec. 26, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said.
But earlier Thursday the search group, in a posting on its website, said "Though the body is thought to be Melissa; positive identification must still be confirmed by the medical examiner and law enforcement investigators,"
Investigators said earlier they think Sowders was the victim of foul play.
Her car was found Monday in a parking lot.
Members of Texas EquuSearch and sheriff's deputies searched the Cypress Creek area for several days.
Sowders was last seen by her boyfriend, who told authorities she dropped him off for work at around 6:15 a.m. on Dec. 26.
She was later supposed to meet her estranged husband.
