KILLEEN (April 8, 2013)—A Fort Hood bomb disposal unit and federal investigators were called out Monday after firefighters discovered what was described as a suspicious device while battling a fire that broke out in an abandoned mobile home.
Authorities later said the device was a container filled with black powder that was wired, but lacked a trigger.
A 53-year-old man arrested in connection with the incident was taken to a hospital after complaining of chest pains as authorities were taking him to the Bell County Jail.
The fire broke out at around 4 a.m. in the abandoned trailer at 1381 Slawson Lane in Killeen.
Firefighters found the device inside the mobile home, Bell County Fire Marshal Steve Casey said.
Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were at the scene Monday morning, but later returned to Austin.
An ATF spokesman confirmed that a device was found, but said it did not have the components required to warrant a federal investigation.
