Bus Carrying College Basketball Players Burns On Texas Highway

None of the athletes aboard the charter bus was injured in the fire Thursday.

SHERMAN (February 2, 2012)—A charter bus carrying members of both the men’s and women’s basketball teams from Austin College in Sherman to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport burst into flames Thursday.

Thirty athletes were aboard the bus when it caught fire at around noon Thursday on U.S. Highway 75 near the Grayson-Collin County line.

No one was hurt in the fire, but one student was taken to a hospital as a precaution because of a reaction to the smoke.

The southbound lanes of the highway were closed briefly because of the fire.

The two teams were headed to the airport for a flight to Colorado for a competition.

A second bus was brought in to get the students to the airport for the flight.

The teams are competing in a contest at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colo.

A review of the incident is planned, the college said on its website Thursday.
