Central Texas Hit-And-Run Victim Suffers Another Setback

Michelle Newton faces a long recovery.

Michelle Newton faces a long recovery.

WACO (December 20, 2012)--Michelle Newton, 24, of Kempner, who was critically injured in a near-fatal hit-and-run accident on Dec. 1 in Harker Heights, will undergo stomach surgery Friday at Scott & White Hospital in Temple after developing a major infection.

Newton, who has been undergoing therapy at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco, expected to spend Christmas with her family, but is now faced with at least six more weeks in the hospital.

The infection is the latest complication in Newton’s long and painful recovery as a result of which she and her family are also facing mounting financial pressure.

Newton’s mother, Kathy Vaughn, underwent spinal fusion surgery in October and then suffered a heart attack in November.

With Newton uninsured and unable to work, the family is facing the possible loss of their home.

A late model red Ford Ranger pickup truck struck Newton just after midnight on Dec. 1 at the intersection of West Veterans Memorial Boulevard and Harley Drive, shattering her pelvis and breaking her back and both of her legs.

The impact threw her 30 feet.

Friends and paramedics are credited with saving her life.

The driver of the truck did not stop and remains at large.

Police say the truck should have damage to the passenger side headlight.

Newton was unconscious and in intensive care for seven days, and two weeks passed before she was allowed to see her 4-year-old son.

She underwent intensive therapy at Hillcrest simply to learn how to get from her bed to her wheelchair.

Her mother and sister are caring for her son, but the family is struggling financially.

An account has been set up in her mother’s name at First Texas Bank in Lampasas.
