HEARNE (May 18, 2014) More than 100 mourners turned out to celebrate the life of a 93-year-old Hearne woman who was shot and killed during an armed confrontation with a now former police officer.

A funeral service was held Saturday afternoon in Hearne for Pearlie Golden, who was killed on May 6 at her home by a Hearne police officer who responded to a report of a woman brandishing a gun.

The Hearne City Council later voted to fire Officer Stephen Stem.

Neighbor Margie Caballero described Golden as "the sweetest woman that could be."

Cedric Chappel, who grew up next door to Golden, told KBTX-TV she was "a very very positive person" in the community.

Texas Rangers are helping investigate.

The findings of the investigation will be presented to a grand jury.
