Central Texas House Fire Leaves Family Of Five Homeless

By: Paul Shelton Email

ITASCA (May 28, 2012)--A home just north of Itasca was destroyed by fire early Sunday morning and the family of five that lived there was displaced, but no one was hurt.

Hill County Sheriff Jeffrey Lyon said the home belonged to Michael and Rachel Bruton.

Rachel Bruton is Lyon's administrative assistant at the Hill County Sheriff's Office and serves as the department's crime scene technician.

Lyon said the fire, which started at around 3:30 a.m. Sunday about one mile north of Itasca on U.S. Highway 81, burned the one-story brick home to the ground.

The Brutons and their three teenage children were home at the time of the fire but all, including the family dog, escaped without injury.

Lyon said the family is staying with Rachel Bruton's mother who lives in nearby Midlothian.

Lyon said the family dog is staying at his home.

Firefighters from Itasca, Hillsboro, Bynum, Covington, Blum, Mertens, Lakeview and Liberty Hill, which is in neighboring Johnson County, responded to the blaze.

The cause of the fire has not been determined Monday but Lyon said his arson investigator is looking into the blaze, although he said there is no indication of suspicious activity.
