BRYAN (June 30, 2012)—A Brazos County jury deliberated about 4½ hours in Bryan on Friday before sentencing Stanley Lamar Griffin, 47, to death for killing a woman whose wounded 9-year-old son managed to call a relative for help.

The jury found Griffin guilty last week of capital murder in the strangulation of Jennifer Hailey, 29.

Investigators said Hailey and her son were attacked at their College Station home.

After the attack, the boy called his grandmother and told her a man killed his mother and "choked" him.

The boy, who's now 11, suffered stab wounds.

DNA evidence helped link Griffin to the attacks.

Defense attorneys argued that he was mentally retarded and ineligible for the death penalty.
