LAKE WHITNEY (June 3, 2012)—A 20-year-old Iredell woman who was at Lake Whitney Sunday morning with friends jumped into the water off Redwood Lodge and never resurfaced.

Lake Whitney water rescuers and rangers from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department found Hayley Burns’ body a short time later in the cove where she and friends had been swimming.

Hill County Sheriff Jeffrey Lyon said Burns was at the lake with a group of friends and at about 5:45 a.m. Sunday the crowd was jumping off the back of a boat into the water.

The boat was floating in a cove just off the bank at the Redwood Lodge, near the old Katy bridge, on the Hill County side of the lake.

Hill County Justice of the Peace Martis Ward pronounced Burns dead at the scene and ordered her body taken to the Southwest Institute of Forensic Science, in Dallas, for autopsy.
