TEMPLE (May 2, 2014) Colleagues and the community are stepping up to help veteran Temple Fire & Rescue Capt. LeRoy Vargas, who’s battling cancer.

Vargas, a 32-year veteran of the department, was recently diagnosed, Temple Fire & Rescue spokesman Thomas Pechal said.

He’s now undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment, Pechal said.

Vargas is a paramedic and is responsible for the response to incidents involving such things as high-angle, confined space and swift water rescues.

Vargas is a runner who completed the Army Marathon on March 2.

Once he’s recovered, he hopes to coordinate a half-marathon benefitting other firefighters who are battling cancer, Pechal said.

The Temple Professional Firefighters Association Local 846 in conjunction with Horny Toad Harley Davidson is holding a benefit for Vargas from noon to 4 p.m. May 10 at the dealership at 7454 South General Bruce Dr. in Temple.

In a show of support, Vargas’ fellow firefighters plan to have their hair cut or buzzed by stylists from Great Clips, who will provide haircuts to the public in exchange for donations, Pechal said.

The benefit will also include live entertainment, a silent auction, food and drinks, and pony rides for children.

All proceeds will go to Vargas “as he fights a battle he is determined to win,” Pechal said.

Residents who would like to contribute can also make donations at any Extraco Bank Branch.

The LeRoy Vargas account number is 20491429.
