MARLIN (January 12, 2013)--The Marlin Police and Fire Departments sponsored a basketball tournament to raise money for Marlin police chief Darrell Allen who was severely injured in a car accident in November.

"We really feel alot of loyalty to people like Chief Allen and we want to support him," said Buck Rogers, Marlin police department chaplin.

The "One City-One Team Hoop It Up Tournament" kicked off at noon at the Marlin High School gymnasium.

"I just had numerous people come to me and ask how is he doing, when is he coming back , what can we do to help?" Damien Eaglin, Marlin police officer said. "This is what they can do to help."

Those who attended purchased raffle tickets.

Many items were donated for the event including a flat screen TV, $100 gift card for gas and a Xbox 360.

The Marlin police department also made t-shirts for the game that say "One City, One Team."

"It's chiefs motto, he promotes one city, one team and we all have to come together to get things accomplished," Eaglin said.

Allen suffered fractured ribs, a punctured lung and a traumatic brain injury in the car accident.

Allen wasn't wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the SUV.

"Theres no excuse for not wearing it, but I do have mixed feelings because physicians have told me had I had it in place, I probably would have perished," Allen said.

He is now in a wheelchair but is expected to make a full recovery.

"It was an eye opener, I have a second chance at life I look at things a whole lot different," Allen said.

Allen will go back to working part-time at the Marlin police department this week.
