WACO (July 23, 2012)—Patrick Stephen Murphy, 58, the president and CEO of the YMCA of Central Texas, was in serious condition Monday at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center the bicycle he was riding collided with an SUV in an intersection during the TriWaco race Sunday.
Murphy was taken to the hospital at around 7:40 a.m. Sunday from near Steinbeck Bend and Lake Shore Drive with what police called serious injuries.
Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said Murphy was participating in the TriWaco race when his bicycle struck an SUV whose driver had pulled into his path.
The driver swerved to try to avoid Murphy and the SUV struck another vehicle, Swanton said.
Swanton said the SUV driver was directed to move through an intersection while the bicycle riders had a red light, but Murphy evidently thought he was clear to proceed.
Organizers for the TriWaco event told bicycle riders they did not have to stop for red lights during the race, so Murphy continued through the intersection and struck the SUV.
No one else was injured in the accident, Swanton said.
