TEMPLE (October 16, 2011)—Gregory Anthony Salas, 27, whom police identified as a Fort Hood soldier, was pronounced dead at the scene Friday night after his convertible overturned on Interstate 35 in Temple, leaving him trapped beneath the car.
Police said the accident happened at around 9:45 p.m. Friday on the southbound interstate just south of South Loop 363.
Investigators determined that Salas was driving south when his older model convertible suddenly swerved to the right, struck a concrete retaining wall and overturned, landing on its top.
The highway was closed for several hours while the Temple Police Department’s Traffic Unit Accident Reconstruction Team gathered evidence.
Salas was a private who was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division’s 4th Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade.
He joined the Army in October 2005 and deployed to Iraq from April 2009 to April 2010, Fort Hood said.
