Crash On Rain-Slickened Local Highway Leaves One Dead

MCLENNAN COUNTY (March 15, 2014) A pickup truck in which two men were riding veered off a rain-slickened Highway 6 Saturday afternoon between Riesel and Waco and slammed into a parked wrecker.

The driver, Esteban Ticas, 66, of Houston died in the crash and his passenger, Roberto Ruiz, 41, was critically injured and was taken to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, Department of Public Safety Trooper D.L. Wilson said.

Rain was falling in the area when the accident happened at around 1:10 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of Highway 6 and Harrison Road in the Hallsburg area.

The wrecker was parked on the shoulder of the highway at the scene of an earlier minor accident when the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado in which Tica and Ruiz were riding struck it, Wilson said.

The truck may have been traveling too fast for the conditions at the time of the crash, Wilson said.
