KILLEEN (May 12, 2013)--Dozens of firefighters battled a major fire Sunday afternoon that destroyed an abandoned apartment building in Killeen.

The fire broke out at around 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the building at North 10th Street and East Dunn Avenue in Killeen.

By 3:30 p.m. the fire was out and crews were dousing hot spots.

Some nearby residents were evacuated because of the heavy smoke and streets in the immediate area were closed because of the fire and were expected to remain closed through the afternoon.

The fire started at the south end of the building and moved north, fire officials said.

The cause has not been determined.

The building was abandoned and partially boarded up.

Neighbors said it had been without electrical service for months, but Oncor later said the power to the building was still on.

A total of about 60 firefighters responded including crews from the Killeen Volunteer Fire Department and Fort Hood.
