GEORGETOWN (July 24, 2012)—Steven Alan Thomas, 53, was in custody Tuesday in Williamson County, charged with capital murder in the Nov. 4, 1980 beating, rape, and strangulation of Mildred McKinney, 73.

She was found dead in her home in southwest Williamson County.

Thomas was arrested Monday in Austin, where he was living.

Investigators said Thomas, who used to live in Garland, denied knowing the victim or assaulting her.

Sgt. John Foster said DNA was collected from Thomas earlier, but declined to provide further details.

Thomas was ordered held in lieu of $1.5 million bond.
