HEARNE (July 16, 2013)—A crash involving an 18-wheeler and a passenger car left one person dead and closed both the northbound and southbound lanes of Highway 6 Tuesday morning.
The victim was identified as Charles Eric Wheatfall, 39, of Navasota.
He was driving a 2007 Nissan Altima north on the highway when the car crossed into the southbound lane and into the path of the southbound 18-wheeler, which was hauling a load of gravel.
Witnesses told KBTX-TV in Bryan that Wheatfall was looking down and didn’t try to avoid the oncoming truck.
The driver of the 18-wheeler, Billy Ray Higgins of College Station, suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash and was taken to St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan.
The accident happened about two miles south of Hearne near FM 2549.
The highway was closed in the area of the accident Tuesday morning, but was partially reopened Tuesday afternoon.
Traffic was limited to one lane in each direction late Tuesday afternoon.
