Fire That Damaged Local Middle School Was Set On Purpose

KILLEEN (September 24, 2012)—The fire that heavily damaged Gateway Middle School Sunday in Killeen was set on purpose and fire investigators are trying to find a man who was seen climbing a fence behind the building at the time of the blaze, police said Monday.

The fire was reported just before 4 p.m. Saturday at the alternative school in the 1300 block of Gowen Drive.

The building was engulfed in flames when the first crews arrived.

The roof on the east side of the building collapsed and a portion of Zephyr Drive was shut down for several hours as crews battled the fire..

The fire destroyed the school’s offices and other buildings sustained fire, smoke and water damage.

No one was hurt.

The man for whom fire investigators are looking is Hispanic, in his late 20s or early 30s, stands about 6-feet tall, weighs more than 200 pounds and was last seen wearing a yellow shirt and dark pants.

Gateway Middle School and High School students were in class on Monday morning.

The middle school students were relocated to the old KISD Career Center/Pathways Complex at 3004 Atkinson Ave.
