HILLSBORO (September 10, 2012)-It's a heart warming ending to a story that began with neglect. This afternoon, the one month old puppy named "Julie" that we introduced you to in July went home with her new owner.

In late July, Julie was found in the floorboards of a man's truck by a Hill County Sheriff deputy with her ears and tail ripped off.

The deputy was in the process of arresting the man, who appeared intoxicated outside of a gas station near Abbot. During the arrest, the deputy decided to search his truck.

Inside, the deputy found a large knife and Julie. She was immediately taken to a local veterinary clinic where her ears and tail were cauterized.

Julie was then dropped off at the Hill County Paw Pals Animal Shelter where she has been recovering since July.

"When she came to us she was in pretty bad shape," Paw Pals Adoption Administrator Sue Ponde said.

"You can't help but get attached to a dog like that."

After originally airing her story of abuse, adoption offers for Julie poured in from all over the state.

Needless to say, Paw Pals had more than enough candidates for Julie's future home.

"We wanted to make sure we didn't put her back in the same environment where she would be mistreated again," Ponde said.

But only one applicant fit the bill. Earlier this month, Paw Pals selected Sean Lowrey as Julie's new owner.

"I replied to Sue's e-mail in about 30 seconds," Lowrey said.

"I was excited but really surprised, I didn't know how many applicants there were."

Lowrey, a resident of Harker Heights, heard Julie's story and applied immediately.

Paw Pals picked Lowrey because he works with Allegiance Ambulance, and would understand the importance of Julie's future medical needs.

"She's got some special needs and she needs some special care," Lowrey said.

"I think I can give that to her without a doubt."

As she watches Julie grip a chew toy and play "tug-of-war" with Lowrey, Ponde feels she made the right decision.

"She's going to a wonderful home with someone who obviously has already fallen in love with her," Ponde said.

Roberto Ramirez Martinez was arrested at the scene where Julie was found. Originally he was charged with animal cruelty.

The Hill County's DA office said earlier today that Martinez pleaded guilty to a lesser charge on August 24th, and was released from jail.

He was given two years of probation.
