Dog That Befriended Marines In Afghanistan Has New Home Here

LOTT (November 17, 2010)--An 8-month-old Afghan Wolfhound that was adopted by a group of Marines in Afghanistan has a new home in Central Texas.

The dog, named Kujo, was beaten and struggling to survive when the Marines found him.

He followed the men for miles on long patrols and waited outside their camp every day.

The people of Afghanistan tend to not like dogs and the animals are often beaten and even shot, so when the platoon's deployment came to an end, the Marines began to search for someone back in the United States who would be willing to provide a home for Kujo.

Valerie and Stan Parker of Lott, whose son is also a Marine, answered the call.

They saw Kujo's story on a blog for Marine parents and volunteered to adopt the dog if the Marines could find a way to transport him from Afghanistan to Central Texas.

Donations poured in from Waco to California, and in just one week, the Nowzad Dog Rescue, a British organization, was able to find Kujo in Afghanistan and send him on the three-day journey to Dallas.

The Parkers picked up Kujo on Tuesday and brought him back to their home in Lott.

"We're thrilled. He's a big baby-we both fell in love with him instantly," Valerie Parker said Wednesday.

As soon as Kujo is trained, he will have 56 acres to roam.

Valerie's husband, Stan says it's the least his family can do to repay the Marines.

"These boys sacrificed a lot to be doing what they're doing for us and this is a little thing that we could do for them," he said.
