WACO (August 30, 2013)—The man who died at a Waco hospital after the dump truck he was driving veered off West Loop 340, struck a sign, knocked out a natural gas meter, crossed a parking lot and came to rest in a grassy area between businesses as William Newton Ross III, 54, of Bellmead.
The accident happened just before 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the 1600 block of West Loop 340.
Witnesses told officers the truck suddenly veered off the highway, crossing the inside traffic lane, striking the sign at Central Transportation Systems, knocking down the gas meter and crossing the company’s parking lot before stopping.
A Waco police officer performed CPR on Ross until paramedics arrived.
Ross was pronounced dead at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center.
McLennan County Justice of the Peace Pete Peterson ordered an autopsy.
Police originally said the victim was 55.
