FORT WORTH (February 4, 2013)--Eleven horses were been killed early Monday in a fast-moving stable fire, Fort Worth fire officials said.

A Fort Worth police officer spotted the flames at around 2:30 a.m. Monday.

Firefighters and police were able to rescue eight horses from their stalls as they battled the flames.

Fire Department spokesman Tim Hardeman said three of the rescued animals were burned and one isn't expected to survive.

Two buildings were destroyed and another heavily damaged.

Hardeman says wind gusts of 20 miles per hour helped fan the flames at the privately owned stable where people paid to house their horses.

One firefighter suffered burns to his hands as he worked to free the animals.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
