Ex-Texas Cop Convicted Of Killing Estranged Common-Law Wife

CORPUS CHRISTI (December 7, 2012)—Former Alice police Officer Jose Gonzales III is headed to prison after jurors convicted him of capital murder in the 2011 shooting death of his estranged common-law wife.

Prosecutors did not seek the death penalty so Gonzales received an automatic life prison term after being the jury returned the verdict Thursday.

Judge Angelica Hernandez also sentenced Gonzales to life in prison for his conviction for burglary of a habitation to commit aggravated assault in the same incident.

The sentences will be served concurrently.

Investigators say Gonzales attacked Leslie Morin on Dec. 12, 2011 at the home she shared with her mother, who wasn't hurt.

He fled with the couple's 8-year-old son before surrendering in Alice.

Authorities have said Morin left Gonzales about two weeks before the shooting.
