Ex-UT Athlete Freed From Central Texas Jail; Murder Charge Dropped

ROUND ROCK (December 8, 2012)—Patric Fairs, 47, was free Saturday after more than a year in the Williamson County Jail awaiting trial on a murder charge that prosecutors have dropped.

Fairs was to have gone on trial this month for the murder of his girlfriend Philise Lateria Estes, 33, who was strangled in 2006 at the home the two shared in Round Rock.

But Williamson County court documents show prosecutors moved to dismiss the case "in the interest of justice pending further investigation."

Fairs walked out of jail Friday.

Additional testing is needed on evidence and Fairs harbors anger toward prosecutors, one of his attorneys said.

Prosecutors said results of testing could return the case to grand jurors.

Fairs played basketball for the University of Texas in the 1980s, was an NBA draft pick, and later played in Australia.
