HOUSTON (January 3, 2014) An execution date has been set for Texas death row inmate Tommy Lynn Sells, 49, who's been linked to more than a dozen slayings and who claims to have committed as many as 70 murders around the country.

Sells is scheduled to receive a lethal injection on April 3 in Huntsville.

A state judge in Del Rio in Val Verde County set the date for Sells, whose appeals attorney said Friday lawyers were "kind of surprised" when they received a copy of the order.

Sells was sentenced to die for slashing the throats of two girls in 1999 at their home near Del Rio.

Katy Harris, 13, was killed, but her 10-year-old friend survived.

Sells entered the girls’ home with the intention of sexually assaulting the older girl, whose throat was slashed and who was stabbed repeatedly, authorities said.

Sells has called himself "Coast to Coast," a reference to where he says he's committed murders.
