Female DPS Trooper Faces Firing Over Roadside Body Cavity Search

DALLAS (January 30, 2013)—A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper faces dismissal after an investigation of her videotaped body cavity search of two women along a Dallas-area highway.

Agency director Steve McCraw has made a preliminary determination to terminate Trooper Kelly Helleson, Department of Public Safety spokesman Tom Vinger said.

Vinger, in a statement Wednesday, said Helleson will have the opportunity to meet with McCraw before her firing is final.

In December Helleson and Trooper David Ferrell were put on paid suspension as the case awaits review by a Dallas County grand jury.

Texas Rangers helped investigate last July's traffic stop in Irving.

An Irving woman and her adult niece sued both troopers and McCraw on Dec. 17, claiming the search was illegal and humiliating.

No drugs were found.
