HARKER HEIGHTS (September 24, 2012)--The driver who died when his car crashed into a bridge support in Harker Heights and burst into flames was identified Monday afternoon as Jong Dal Lee, 21, a soldier assigned to Fort Hood’s 1st Cavalry Division.

The accident happened just before midnight at U.S. Highway 190 and FM 2410 in Harker Heights in a construction zone where a new overpass is being erected.

Lee was driving west on U.S. Highway 190 when his car hit the north pillar of the bridge and burst into flames, police said.

First responders were dispatched to the scene after a caller reported hearing an explosion and then seeing a car on fire.

The 2007 Dodge Charger was engulfed in flames by the time firefighters and police arrived.

Lee was able to get out of the burning vehicle, but collapsed and died at the scene early Monday morning, Harker Heights Fire Chief Jack Collier said.

An autopsy was ordered.

Lee joined the Army in April 2010 and since September 2012 had been assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division’s Company A, 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team.

He deployed to Iraq from June 2011 until January.
