Fire In Small Texas Town Kills Two

PALESTINE (September 30, 2013)—A man and a woman died in a weekend fire in a downtown building in the small East Texas town of Palestine.

Capt. Jeff Croft of the Palestine Fire Department said the fire was reported early Saturday morning.

He said another person was evidently able to escape from the burning building.

A news release from Wendy Ellis, Palestine’s interim city manager, said crews arrived to find flames and heavy smoke.

The building began to collapse minutes later, the news release said.

The building, which housed a thrift store, was a total loss.

Surrounding buildings received minimal damage.
