TEMPLE (March 3, 2014) An early-morning fire Monday in Temple left four people homeless and sent one of them to Scott & White Hospital.

The fire was reported just before 12:30 a.m. Monday in the 4800 block of Hartrick Bluff Drive.

Flames were coming from two windows of the house when the first crews arrived.

The four residents escaped safely, but one, an elderly man, was taken to the hospital for evaluation for smoke exposure, fire officials said.

The fire heavily damaged one bedroom and the rest of the house sustained smoke and heat damage, officials said.

The preliminary estimate of damages to the house and contents is $50,000, officials said.

The fire, which started in the damaged bedroom, was accidental, but the exact cause has not been determined, officials said.

The displaced residents are staying with relatives, officials said.

The house had a smoke alarm, but it was not working, officials said.

Crews remained at the scene until just after 3 a.m. Monday.
