On September 18, 1942—70 years ago today--Fort Hood was formally activated as Camp Hood as the U.S. rushed to expand training in the months after entering World War II. The Army announced in January 1942 that a Tank Destroyer and Firing Center would be established in and around Killeen on a site that initially covered 108,000 acres, displacing families that lived in the communities of Clear Creek, Elijah and Sugar Loaf among others. The camp was named for Texas Civil War Hero Gen. John Bell Hood. Construction was completed by September 1942, additional land was added and more work was finished by September of 1943, expanding the post to 158,000 acres with more than 5,600 buildings and 35 ranges. After the war ended, Fort Hood was established as a permanent installation and the post was poised to grow. By the 1960s Fort Hood was home to about 40,000 troops. Troops from the post played key roles in the first Gulf War in the early 1990s and an even bigger role in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan after the 9/11 attacks.
