On November 29, 1961—52 years ago today—“Enos, the orbiting chimpanzee fared well,” NASA reported. Enos was launched into space aboard the Mercury-Atlas 5 spacecraft, which orbited Earth twice before returning. Once chimp and capsule were recovered, observers said Enos jumped for joy and dashed around the deck of the recovery ship, shaking the hands of his rescuers. The flight was a dress rehearsal for the first flight by a human. Lt. Col. John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth on Feb. 20, 1962.
