On Dec. 29, 1913—100 years ago today--the first true "cliffhanger" movie serial, "The Adventures of Kathlyn," starring Kathlyn Williams, premiered. The success of the serial’s 13 episodes led to a full-length film in 1916.

On December 29, 1917, former Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley was born in Calvert.
On December 29, 2006, tornadoes touched down near Oglesby, near the Womack Community in Bosque County and in Limestone County. The more powerful of the two twisters in Limestone County destroyed homes, and outbuildings, and hit a personal care center for veterans, killing one veteran and injuring several others. More than a dozen other injuries were also reported in Limestone County.
On December 19, 2011, Baylor, led by Heisman winner Robert Griffin III, defeated Washington 67-56 in the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, the Bears’ first bowl win since 1992. It was Baylor’s first 10-win season since 1980.

Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich's lawyer responded to impeachment charges, saying a vague array of charges and evidence did not merit removing his client from office. Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf resigned, saying he had lost control of the country to Islamic insurgents. The African Union suspended Guinea after a coup in the West African nation. Grammy-winning jazz musician Freddie Hubbard died in Sherman Oaks, Calif., at age 70. French fashion designer Ted Lapidus died in Cannes at age 79.

One year ago:
Maine's same-sex marriage law went into effect. Shocked Indians mourned the death of a woman who was gang-raped and beaten on a bus in New Delhi nearly two weeks earlier; six suspects were charged with murder. (Four were later sentenced to death; one died in prison; the sixth, a juvenile at the time of the attack, was sentenced to a maximum of three years in a reform home.)
