On March 15, 1912—102 years ago today--the legendary bluesman Sam “Lightnin” Hopkins was born in Centerville. When he was 8, he built his first guitar out of cigar box and some chicken wire. He went on to record 85 albums and toured the world performing such hits as “Penitentiary Blues” and “Shotgun Blues.” After he died on January 30, 1982 in Houston at the age of 69, more than 4,000 fans and musicians attended his funeral.

A drive-by shooting in Mosul, Iraq, killed four American missionaries working for the Richmond, Va.-based Southern Baptist International Mission Board.
