On July 31, 1867--147 years ago today--four companies of the 6th U.S. Cavalry arrived and established Fort Griffin overlooking the Clear Fork of the Brazos River in Shackelford County. The fort was deactivated 14 years later in 1881, but the partially restored ruins of the post are now part of a 506-acre historic site. The site is also home to a portion of the official Texas longhorn herd.
