On Feb. 17, 1801—212 years ago today--the U.S. House of Representatives broke an electoral tie between Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr, electing Jefferson president; Burr became vice president. The House vote was the final chapter in one of the most controversial elections in U.S. history. The outcome led directly to passage and ratification of the Twelfth Amendment, which redefined the process by which the president and vice president are elected. The House would decide only one more presidential election, the 1824 race in which John Quincy Adams, Henry Clay, William Crawford and Andrew Jackson were the leading candidates, but none received a majority of the electoral vote. Adams won on the first ballot in the House and later named Clay secretary of state.
