On July 17, 1987, a bus loaded with 43 young people from Seagoville Baptist Church was swept away while trying to cross the swollen Guadalupe River near Comfort. Ten died.
On July 17, 1997, 18 children were injured when a large portion of a cottonwood tree collapsed on them at a dunking booth at an annual summer carnival at Bledsoe-Miller Park in Waco. Tenisha Wright, 8, died of her injuries.

On July 17, 1981, 114 people were killed when a pair of suspended walkways above the lobby of the Kansas City Hyatt Regency Hotel collapsed, landing one atop the other, during a tea dance.
