KILLEEN (May 16, 2013)--The Bell County Grand Jury declined to indict a Killeen woman who was charged with murder in her husband's 2012 shooting death.

The grand jury decided the shooting of Jose Luis Mateo was justified because his wife, Vilmarie Mateo was defending herself from abuse.

Jose Mateo, 36, died at his home in August 2012 after he was shot during a fight with his wife while the couple's then 9-year-old son was at the house.

Police arrested Vilmarie Mateo, 38, a few days after the shooting and charged her with murder.

But Bell County Assistant District Attorney Murff Bledsoe said
Thursday that after a lengthy investigation into the death, police established a pattern of spousal abuse and the grand jury decided Vilmarie Mateo was only defending herself and her child when she shot her husband to death.
