COPPERAS COVE (March 5, 2013)--Traffic had returned to normal at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday after a downed power line on U.S. 190 in Copperas Cove forced police to close the westbound lanes of the highway.
At around 11:15 a.m., traffic in all three westbound lanes of U.S. 190 at MLK Boulevard was being diverted onto MLK southbound to detour around the area.
Eastbound traffic was allowed to pass, but because westbound traffic was being directed across the eastbound lanes, traffic was moving extremely slowly.
A police officer at the scene said a sign at a business along U.S. 190 was buffeted by a strong wind and eventually blew onto a power line, causing the line to fall onto the street.
Police and fire units were at the scene to control traffic and crews from the power company had just arrived to repair the downed line.
A wind advisory was in effect until noon Tuesday.
A 49-mile-per-hour gust was recorded Tuesday morning in Killeen.
