Handcuffed Texas Man Steals Patrol Car, Escapes

WHITE SETTLEMENT (December 10, 2012)--A handcuffed burglary suspect who was alone in the back of a patrol car managed to roll down a rear window, open the door and then steal the vehicle, police in White Settlement said.

Officers arrested Darren Porter, 41, on Friday on suspicion of breaking in to an antiques shop in White Settlement near Fort Worth.

He was handcuffed and placed in the rear of a patrol car.

The rear power window switches in patrol cars are supposed to be disabled, but in this case they evidently weren’t.

Police Lt. J.P. Bevering says Porter was able to roll down the window, reach out and open the door.

Dash cam video from another squad car shows him climbing into the driver's seat and taking off.

Police say they're checking other squad cars to make sure the windows don't open.

Porter remained at large Monday.
