Head-On Crash Leaves Central Texas Man Dead


MCLENNAN COUNTY (April 5, 2014) A head-on crash late Friday night on a Highway 6 frontage road in the Speegleville area left one man dead and sent four other people to a local hospital.

The accident happened at around 11:45 p.m. Friday on the southbound frontage road just south of McLaughlin Road.

John Matthew Bumgardner, 42, of China Spring, died in the crash.

He was driving a 2005 Mini Cooper north on the frontage road when he failed to yield to a southbound Chevrolet HHR whose driver was turning onto a Highway 6 access ramp, Department of Public Safety Trooper D.L. Wilson said.

Bumgardner’s car collided head on with the 2011 HHR, Wilson said.

James Esquivel, 23, Sr., the driver of the HHR, and his passengers, Daisy Jaimes, 23, Annalysa Esquivel, 4, and James, Esquivel, Jr., 1, all of Hewitt, were injured.

James Esquivel, Jr., was taken to McLane Children’s Hospital Scott & White in Temple in stable condition.

The other three were taken to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center.

James Esquivel, Sr., was in serious condition and Jaimes and Annlyssa Esquivel were in stable condition, Wilson said.
