Services Set For Central Texas Church Pastor, Elderly Man Killed In Crash

WOODWAY (January 31, 2013)—Services were scheduled Thursday for Jim Gray, 68, the associate senior adult minister at First Baptist Church of Woodway, who was killed late Wednesday afternoon in a head-on crash on Old Lorena Road as he drove to the church for Wednesday night services.

An elderly man injured in the head-on collision just before 4 p.m. Wednesday between his Dodge pickup truck and Gray's minivan at the intersection of Old Lorena Road and Church Road was flown to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center by helicopter, where he later died.

Police identified him Thursday as Elmer Franks, 89, of Hewitt.

A service will be held for Franks at 2 p.m. Saturday at Scott’s Funeral Home in Gatesville. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.

A service will be held for Gray at 11 a.m. Monday at First Woodway Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Wilkirson Hatch Bailey Funeral Home in Waco.

Gray, a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, joined the church in 1999, according to First Woodway’s website.

He was a father of four and a grandfather.

The accident happened a month and a day after the death of the church’s senior pastor.

The Rev. Mike Toby, 65, died on Dec. 29 at his home after he was diagnosed with brain cancer in October.

He chose not to undergo surgery and explained his decision in a widely viewed video that one church member called Toby’s best sermon.

The Waco Police Department’s accident reconstruction unit is investigating the crash.

Officers from Waco, Woodway, Lorena and the Department of Public Safety responded to the accident scene.
