WACO (December 25, 2012)—A whipping north wind hampered Waco firefighters Tuesday afternoon as a roaring fire raced through a North Waco home.
Four people who were inside the house were able to escape the flames but firefighters could not save the house.
Firefighters were sent at after 3 p.m. to a single-story, wood frame house at 1123 N. 11th where the first units on the scene reported smoke and flames coming from the house.
A woman, her son and two grandchildren had escaped the blaze before firefighters arrived.
A stiff north wind fanned the flames and hampered firefighters in their effort and within a few minutes the roof collapsed.
Crews worked to contain the fire to the single structure and prevent it from spreading to adjacent homes.
Police were called to cordon off 11th Street while firefighters battled the blaze.
A fire marshal was called to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire.
The local chapter of the American Red Cross was called to assist the family with shelter and other needs.
