MARLIN (January 22, 2013)—A fire that may have started in the attic of a house Tuesday morning in Marlin displaced a woman and her three young children and killed the family’s pet dog.

The woman, whose name wasn’t immediately available, was awakened Tuesday morning by smoke in the house on the corner of Virginia Avenue and Ward Street.

She and the three children escaped safely and were outside when the first firefighters arrived.

Their dog died of smoke inhalation, firefighters said.

The fire heavily damaged the inside of the house and spread to a car parked outside.

The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the residents.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
