AUSTIN (June 3, 2014) Grace Ann Garcia, 59, the executive director of the Austin-based Democratic fundraising group Annie’s List, died Monday when an 18-wheeler slammed into the rear of the car in which she was riding on Interstate 35.

The accident happened at around 3:26 p.m. on northbound I-35 in Waxahachie.

Garcia was a passenger in a car driven by an Annie’s List staffer, who was seriously hurt.

The staffer, who was not identified, was taken to an area hospital and was in intensive care Tuesday.

The car was stopped in traffic when the 18-wheeler hit it from behind, authorities said.

Garcia died at the scene.

Garcia worked in the White House under President Bill Clinton and later served as an adviser to then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Last year she became executive director of Annie's List, which backs Democratic candidates who support abortion rights.

Among the group’s biggest races this election year has been Wendy Davis' run for Texas governor.

Davis said in a statement that the loss creates a void in the landscape of Texas politics "that simply cannot be filled."

“Grace did so much for me and for countless Texas women. She was a part of this extraordinary journey we've been working on together that wouldn't have been possible without her. I know she will be with us every step of the way in our hearts and will continue to inspire us every single day,” Davis said.
