McALLEN (July 3, 2012)--A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent was shot early Tuesday while conducting surveillance in South Texas.
ICE spokeswoman Nina Pruneda said the agent with ICE's Homeland Security Investigations was shot Tuesday morning in Hidalgo County while conducting surveillance related to an ongoing criminal investigation.
Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino, whose agency is assisting in the investigation, says unidentified men shot the agent around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday near Hargill.
Colleagues rushed him to a hospital, where he was in stable condition early Tuesday afternoon following surgery.
Trevino said investigators do not have any suspects or a vehicle description, but said they are following some promising leads.
Dozens of law enforcement officers from multiple agencies were scouring a miles-long crime scene bisecting Hargill, looking for discarded shell casings and other evidence.
