CANTON (July 2, 2014) More than 120 inmates were moved out of the Van Zandt County Jail after some of them figured out how to compromise the jail’s lock system, authorities said.
No one escaped from the jail in Canton, Sheriff Michael Lindsey Ray said.
Ray says contractors must replace internal components of the defective locks and the fix could take two weeks.
Prisoners were transferred to jails in Henderson, Kaufman and Upshur Counties after the lock problems were discovered Monday.
Van Zandt County will pay about $30 per inmate, per day to the counties.
The county's minimum security jail has a different locking system and those inmates were not affected.
