MARLIN (December 24, 2010)—A fire that was reported just before 10 p.m. Thursday at 713 Capps St. in Marlin was arson, officials said Friday.

The house was vacant at the time and only a back bedroom sustained heavy fire damage.

The rest of the house was damaged by smoke and heat.

Neighbors told authorities they didn’t see any suspicious activity, but said their dogs started barking around 8 p.m.

At 9:30 p.m. the dogs became more agitated and then neighbors saw smoke coming from the house.

Marlin’s fire chief said there is no evidence of juvenile mischief; the fire seemed planned.

Samples from two points of origin were sent to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives lab and results are expected mid January.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about the fire to call the Marlin Police Department at (254)-883-9255
