Lightning Strike Activates Local Tornado Warning Siren

BELTON (January 25, 2012)—A warning siren that sounded at around 6 a.m. Wednesday in Belton as heavy storms moved through was evidently activated by a lightning strike.

The siren startled at least a few residents.

Dennis Baker with Bell County Emergency Management said officials think lightning struck a siren tower on Main Street near the Belton Library.

The strike tripped the siren, and set it off, he said.

An electrician had to be called out to turn the power off in order to stop the siren after officials determined no weather was threatening.

Baker said he can’t recall a similar incident happening before.
