LITTLE RIVER-ACADEMY (August 21, 2014) Little River-Academy residents will see a familiar face policing their town after the mayor and city council hired former Bell County Constable Luis Cortez on Thursday.
Cortez was among five candidates who applied for the job after interim police Chief Michael Lugo resigned after just 10 days on the job last month.
The mayor said Cortez was selected because he lives nearby in Belton and already is known to most people in the community.
Cortez, a Belton resident, served two terms as constable.
He’ll be sworn in at 6 p.m. Thursday at Little River-Academy City Hall.
Cortez will work under a 60-day trial period, after which the city council will discuss whether to name him police chief.
