TEMPLE (March 20, 2014) The Sprint Call Center in Temple has laid off 170 workers.
The layoffs Tuesday stem from an internal announcement made in January in which the company advised employees of possible workforce reductions, spokeswoman Melinda Tiemeyer said an an email Thursday.
A company statement included in the email said the laid off workers will be eligible for additional pay and benefits, depending on their length of service.
“Employees affected by the change were informed on Tuesday, March 18. The employees were allowed to go home for the day if they wished, will continue to work through March 25 and will be paid through April 8,” the statement said.
Workers were laid off last fall, as well.
The center opened in 2001 in Temple and the company once identified it as one of its top three performing call centers in North America.
